Master's Degree Programme in Public Choice

Osaamistavoitteet

After completing the Master’s Degree Programme in Public Choice a student is expected to be able to:

- identify, evaluate, analyze and contribute to the international academic literature
- learn and use quantitative methods from political science, economics and sociology and apply them to social science issues
- to address issues that involve strategic behavior ranging from institution design, policy design and implementation and decision making by using quantitative tools
- understand social sciences from a comparative (North America and Europe) and multidisciplinary perspective

The program aims to prepare the students for postgraduate studies, independent research work as well as to develop internationally competitive qualifications for European and international institutions and organizations and for professional activity at various tasks in the society, ranging from policy positions to business positions.

Sisältö

The Masters’ program is a quantitative social science program. A student will learn quantitative methods and applies them to social science issues. The program involves an interdisciplinary approach to social science issues across time and space with a focus on comparisons between North America and Europe.
There is a need of cooperation between North America and Europe. The programme aims to respond to the need for competitiveness in quantitative research in the field of social sciences in Finland, European institutions and international organisations.

Master's Degree Programme in Public Choice

General Studies 20 ECTS
KKENMP3 Scientific Writing, 5 ECTS
Language Studies 3 ECTS
Language studies in the Master's degree programme are different depending on the student's educational background. Elementary Finnish course is strongly recommended for students who have not studied Finnish before. Students who have completed basic school education in Finnish can take other language studies from the Language Centre.
Studies on Global Society 15 ECTS
Global Society studies includes a selection of courses from other Master's programmes within Global Society framework at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Students must select courses worth 10 ECTS from the Master's programmes operating under the Global Society framework. In addition students will choose an elective course or complete an internship.
Free Choice Studies 5 ECTS
In Free Choice Studies students can select a course or complete an internship. Free Choice Studies will be agreed with supervisor.
PCP15 Optional internship, 5 ECTS
