School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies
The School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies comprises a range of academic disciplines including Finnish, Swedish, foreign languages, translation and interpreting, and literary studies. Research is pursued in all of these fields, each of which also offers a range of doctoral-level specializations.
The eleven major subjects are: Comparative Literature, English Philology, Finnish Language, Finnish Literature, French Language, German Language and Culture, Scandinavian Languages, Russian Language and Culture, and Translation Studies in English, German and Russian.
Minor subjects include: Czech Language, Estonian Language and Culture, FAST Area Studies (Foundations in Area Studies for Translators), Finnish as a Second and Foreign Language*, Finnish Language, Culture and Society* (Suomen kieli, kulttuuri ja yhteiskunta, SKKY), General Linguistics*, Phonetics*, Spanish Language, the Russian Studies Programme, Technical Communication*, Translation Studies in Swedish*, Translation Theory*.
All of the foreign language studies are intended for a language proficiency level of ~B2-C1 (beginner-level courses are offered only in the case of Czech, Estonian and Russian within the Russian Studies Programme).
The respective languages of instruction in the degree programmes, according to the major subject, are:

The language of instruction in the minor subjects marked with an asterisk* is Finnish.
During the spring semester of 2011, the curriculum and teaching schedule of the School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies will follow those of the former School of Modern Languages and Translation Studies, and, for Comparative and Finnish Literature, those of the former Department of Literature and the Arts:
