Intermediate Studies [Period I]

This course is mainly intended for exchange students. The amount of students accepted is limited and the list of successful applications is disclosed in Nettiopsu on 8.9.2011.

Attendance at the first lecture is required! In case that you are not accepted for the course, please visit the the first lecture and ask for leftovers!

AIMS OF COURSE:

The course is designated for students who have not dealt with accounting in the college. Its main objective is to explain basic accounting terms and relationships as well as to practice the accounting procedures in the system of double entry bookkeeping. The students will obtain the basics for their study of accounting in the future.

BRIEF CONTENT OF COURSE:

  • Base and role of accounting.
  • Basic accounting terms in the SR and according to IFRSs.
  • Assets, equity and liabilities, accounting Equation.
  • The Balance Sheet - content, form, structure.
  • Balance transactions.
  • Account, accounting.
  • Costs, revenue and profit or loss.
  • The Profit and Loss Statement - content, form.
  • Income transactions.
  • Accounting principles - theoretic summary and solving of summary example.
  • Framework.

Intermediate Studies [Period II]

The aim of this course is to give students an introduction to the contemporary sphere of corporate social reporting (CSR), e.g. environmental, social, sustainability and corporate social responsibility reporting. The focus is on discussing issues such as: which companies are reporting, what is being reported and how is this done, and, most importantly, why do companies engage in these activities.

Two introductory lectures will be given, after which students will be assigned an essay (a project work). These assignments will be discussed at the third meeting in December. In addition, students are required to complete an intermediate task prior to the second introductory lecture. Further details regarding the assignments will be available at the first lecture. Completion of the course requires analytical reading of the supplementary material, acquainting on some companies' social reports, completing the intermediate task, and completing the essay (project work) on a given topic. Supplementary reading list will be available.

Intermediate Studies [Period III]

The aim of this course is to give the students an introduction to the basic concepts of CSR and the ways in which business can and claims to contribute to social wellbeing. The course aims at promoting discussion around the various socio-economic implications of business operations within different contexts.

The course starts with introductory lectures, after which students are given an assignment. The assignments are then discussed together in a seminar type of manner. At the end of the course students are expected to write a short learning diary reflecting their perceptions on the issues covered in the course. Supplementary reading list will be available. Completion of the course requires active participation in lectures and seminar and a learning diary of a few pages at the end of the course.

Intermediate Studies [Period IV]

This course aims to familiarize students with the basic aspects of corporate social accounting. The lectures will give an introduction to the field of reporting concerning social and environmental issues and will look at social accounting within companies.

Lectures will be combined with practical exercises during which students will be asked to accomplish small tasks. An essay will be assigned to students at the end of the course. Further details about the tasks to be accomplished as well as reading requirements will be given at the first meeting.  

In order to complete the course, students need to attend all the lectures, be active during practical assignments in class and write a final essay.
