Basic Studies [Period I]

Finnish History Seminar serves as an introduction to the history and culture of Finland. It gives the basic information of the history of Finland from prehistoric times to the present; with focus on those events and phenomena that are especially important for understanding the culture and society of Finland.

The seminar program consists mainly of lectures and seminar-type sessions. On their essays, the students will be able to concentrate on themes which they find the most interesting.

No prior registration required, students should attend the first meeting.

Aim is to give a general picture of the formation of societies and culture in Scandinavia from the 9th century to the 16th century.

The course explores the expansion of the Christian culture sphere to the North, the early state formation in Scandinavia and the effects in the society followed by this change.
