Learning outcomes

After completing the organisation theory and analysis course, the student
- has a solid knowledge of the major theoretical and empirical traditions in organisation theory.
- has a sense of how organisation theory has developed historically.
- is able to identify the unique questions and themes in each line of organisation theory.

General description

The course will begin with an introduction lecture to organisation theory and analysis. The themes for the following weeks cover research areas varying from what goes on inside organizations to how external environments affect organisations. These themes are:

- organisational learning - decision-making in organisations - organisational culture - organisations and their external environment - neoinstitutional theory - organisational ecology - networks and organisations

While the course content is structured around these themes, the lectures provide a background story for how organisational theory has developed historically. This will enable students to understand the intellectual development of organisation theory and its various shifts in emphasis. The students are required to attend lectures, read academic articles identified by the instructor, write analytical essays, and take part in group presentations and discussions.
