During the course students will gain basic knowledge of the history, terminology, and relevant questions addressed within the field of Transgender Studies, and how they connect to wider Gender/Feminist Studies as well as to trans activism.
Students will also have an overall understanding of the effects of cisnormativity, the medico-legal gatekeeping system and intersectional differences on the lived realities of trans people.
The course consists of five meetings with pre-assigned reading materials. Each meeting will focus on a specific topic such as media representations of trans, medicalisation of trans bodies, and human rights issues. During the course we will work individually as well as in small groups.

Evaluation will be based on participation during classes, finishing assignments and readings given by the teacher, and a final essay or small group presentation.
Readings and tasks will be given in the course Moodle, and those selected to the course will get access to the Moodle by Feb 15.
Participants are required to have finished SOS4.4 Introduction to Gender Studies or equivalent course(s) before taking the course.
Working language will be English, but the final essay can also be written in Finnish.
