Learning outcomes

The student will have a sound understanding of the concepts of state-building, capacity building, security and safety, the new contexts relevant to research and the social scientific theories of security and their relationship to peace research. The student will understand the global security assemblages and issues of global security governance, including cyber security, the development and the content of security sector related policies and activities of the EU, the implications of EU policies and actions on the governance and management of security on national and local level. The students will be able to examine and analyze urban security management complexes and community safety partnerships and other models of networked security governance.

Contents

- history and theoretical frameworks of security governance and the role of security organizations in state-building and capacity building, the theoretical relationships of security and state, order and society
- concepts of security and safety, contemporary social scientific research on security, including multi-disciplinary security studies and critical approaches
- global security networks and security governance systems, EU internal security and other security strategies, national security strategies and concepts, cyber security
- security policy making processes, urban security management, community safety partnerships and local safety planning, networked governance and network management
