Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the basic features of Finnish phonology, morphology, and syntax, and will be able to compare Finnish with other languages. In addition, the student will have a thorough understanding of the core concepts of grammatical description and will be able to use them in analysing texts. They will also know the central principles of editing and will be able to search for additional information pertaining to editing. Furthermore, the student will be able to analyse the temporal, regional, and contextual variation of the Finnish language.
Contents
The course unit explores the structure of the Finnish language, editing, and language variation from the point of view of translation. A central focus of the course unit is the terminology of grammatical description in Finnish, and the student will revise and expand their knowledge of it during the course unit. The course unit investigates the meanings and use of the Finnish language structures in both spoken and written language. In addition, the course unit examines the connection between language structures and text genres and nuances. During the course unit, the student will read recent research on the Finnish language and reflect upon the responsibility a translator has in contributing to the development of the Finnish language.
