General description

This course consists of independent multicultural group work. An information pack is available from the Self-access Center (SAC), room Pinni B5071. The pack includes a registration form which should be completed and submitted to the SAC. Small groups or pairs consisting of both Finnish and international students will be formed within 1-2 weeks, and an email will be sent with the group members' contact information and further instructions. Each participant must keep a learning diary, uploading entries to Moodle after each meeting. A total of 3 credits, 12 contact hours for each credit, can be earned for the course by participating in 1-3 groups. New groups will be formed at the beginning of every period if there are suitable applicants.

Learning outcomes

Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will have:
- worked in a multicultural group, practicing language and intercultural communication skills
- defined both group and individual learning outcomes and set a course plan to achieve them
- explained aspects of their own language and culture, and learned about other languages and cultures
- evaluated their group and individual work based on the learning outcomes they set

Contents

Groups/pairs will meet, create their course plans and and carry them out. They will make their own schedule and be responsible for their own work. After each meeting, participants will write learning diary entries and upload them to Moodle.

Teaching methods per credit:
Groupwork 12 h
Independent work 15 h
The average workload for a student in a 1 credit course is 27 hours, no more than half of which can be contact hours. Groups will make their own schedules. The course may extend over 2 periods.

English is the working language for this course; however, other languages may be used as well. The CEF level in other languages can vary.
