Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student is familiar with the general characteristics of the mixed methods approach and knows the benefits, opportunities and challenges involved in its use, especially relative to using a single quantitative or qualitative method. S/he can assess the reliability of using the method and the results that are produced. S/he is able to apply the mixed methods approach to her/his own research and, when necessary, is able to develop it further so that it meets the needs of her/his research better.

Contents

The mixed methods approach (or multimethodology) refers to the systematic use of several different research methods to gather and analyse data. Typically both quantitative and qualitative methods are used. The courses organised under this heading deal with the concept of mixed methods and the opportunities, limitations and practices of applying this approach. The doctoral students also receive theoretical and practical support so that they can apply mixed methods to their own research.
