Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have a thorough understanding of the principles and norms of editing and will be familiar with language guides, dictionaries, and the institutions of language planning and maintenance. Moreover, they will be able to edit Finnish texts, including translations, by using language guides, dictionaries, and electronic materials as aids. The student will also be able to justify what type of language is effective and appropriate in different situations. Furthermore, they will be familiar with the conventions of Finnish scientific writing and will be able to apply their learning in writing their Bachelor's Thesis.

Contents

The first part of the course unit (Normative Written Finnish for Translators) explores the principles and norms of editing as well as the application of these norms to various types of texts. Additionally, the course unit examines the influences from foreign languages and their implications in written communication. In the workshop section of the course unit, the student edits existing translations produced on translation courses. The second part of the course unit (Academic Writing) investigates scientific texts from different perspectives and explores the central conventions of Finnish scientific writing. The seminar section of the course unit is aimed at discussing the students' ongoing work on their Bachelor's theses and supporting their writing process.
