General description

The aim of the course is to become more aware of the influence of culture on language and communication, and to improve intercultural communication skills through discussion and interaction in mixed groups of Finnish and international students. The group work part of the course will be integrated with Cultural Conversations in the Intercultural Communication Studies program.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to
- have a better understanding of the influence of culture on language and communication
- have practiced and developed their intercultural communication skills in real situations with people from different cultural backgrounds
- be able to evaluate and plan the development of their own intercultural communication skills
- be more aware of cultural difference

Contents

To achieve the learning outcomes, students will
- engage in class discussion and exercises
- engage in independent multicultural group work together with international students
- write a learning diary recording and reflecting on their experiences in the group work
