Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student is familiar with the most important methods of collecting qualitative data and is able to choose the method that best suits her/his own research. S/he is able to estimate the quantity and quality of the data needed to answer her/his research question and understands the principles and processes of choosing the research subject. S/he knows how to plan the data gathering and look for ready-made data as well as estimate the suitability of the data to the research question. S/he is familiar with the principles and processes of managing the research data electronically.

Contents

Various courses may be organised under this heading. In general, at least one research method is looked at and practiced in each course. The doctoral student learns the general skills needed in qualitative data gathering and the basic use of the methods. S/he develops her/his skills as a user of these methods and gets ready to assess how well the methods suit her/his own research. The students learn the basics of managing and storing electronic data. It is possible in some courses to plan the data gathering of one’s own thesis and to get feedback from a supervisor.
