Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the main characteristics of the historical developments of translation theory, as well as with the main theories, trends, and methods of translation studies. The student will be able to describe the characteristics and current trends of translation studies.
They will have an understanding of interpreting as a profession, and will be able to define it by using appropriate terminology. The student will be able to explain, with the help of examples, what interpreting can entail and what type of skills are required of an interpreter. They will be able to define and differentiate between different fields of interpreting and their specific features. The student will be able to perceive interpreting as a multiphase process, and will be able to describe the main stages of that process. They will understand the possible ethical challenges of interpreting.
The student will understand the differences between standard and specialised languages, as well as the basics and the development of terminological research. They will understand the role of terminology in communications in specialised subjects, as well as in translating and interpreting. The student will master the basic principles of equivalence and terminology work.

Contents

The course unit explores the development of translation studies, as well as the central research topics, theories, and methods of translation studies.
The course unit also introduces interpreting as a profession, different interpreting situations and modes, and the interpreting process. In addition, the course unit covers the prerequisites for interpreting (communication skills, listening skills, memory functions, speaking and presentation skills), and the role and ethics of an interpreter.
The course unit also explores the development of terminology as a branch of science, the basic concepts of terminological research, the compiling of concept classifications and definitions, the ways of forming terms, and equivalence and terminology work.

It is recommended that the student takes the subunits Translation Theory and Terminology before or simultaneously with their Bachelor's Thesis seminar.
