Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student understands the ethical principles involved in conducting research as well as the overall significance of research ethics in science and in her/his own research. S/he is familiar with the central principles of ethical conduct in the scientific community as well as the guidelines issued by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity and is able to commit to them. S/he is aware of researchers’ rights and responsibilities and understands their importance. S/he also knows the guidelines for handling alleged misconduct and is aware of the consequences of unethical actions. The doctoral student recognises the ethical choices and decisions involved in her/his own research and is able to apply the principles of sound scientific practice to her/his work. S/he can seek rational solutions to ethical questions and is able to acquire further information on this topic.

Contents

The course examines the responsible conduct of research and the basic questions, rules and principles of research ethics. The course highlights recognising and understanding the ethical questions involved at the different phases of the research process. The participants also have opportunities to reflect and analyse ethical questions in their own research.
