Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have an understanding of the basics of simultaneous interpreting and will be able to interpret general topics in their working languages (Finnish–English–Finnish). They will be familiar with the whispering interpreting technique on a basic level. They will be able to make strategic interpreting decisions and to analyse and justify their choices. In addition, the student will understand the importance of professional and collegial behaviour. They will be able to guide and advise the client in the arrangements for simultaneous interpreting, in meeting the requirements for successful simultaneous interpreting, and in general matters relating to the tasks of the simultaneous interpreter. Moreover, they will know how to prepare for an interpreting assignment.
Contents
The course unit introduces simultaneous interpreting, both whispered interpreting and technology-assisted interpreting. The course unit includes language-specific interpreting exercises. During the course unit, the student will practice preparing for an interpreting assignment and using the prima vista technique in preparing for an interpreting assignment as well as in simultaneous interpreting. Lastly, the course unit provides an introduction to professional behaviour in the interpreting booth and in collegial activities.
