General description
This course is integrated into the "Lääketieteellinen tieto ja tutkimus" study block by using the work conducted in that block to help the students extend their comprehension and production of written medical English
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course of instruction is to provide students with a solid base of knowledge to help them both with the reading of medical texts in their studies and with the future writing of medical articles.
After successful completion of the course, students will - know the structure of medical research articles and their component parts - know the conventions, vocabulary and linguistic features of medical writing (including differences between British and American conventions) - be able to avoid common grammatical pitfalls - be able to reference sources correctly according to the Vancouver style of referencing - be able to evaluate a research article - summarize medical research using appropriate writing conventions
Contents
To achieve the learning outcomes, the students will… - read material describing the structure and linguistic features of medical research articles - complete online exercises to show initial familiarization with aspects of medical writing covered in the material and to develop a good command of grammar - analyze individually the structure and linguistic features of a medical research article - write an English abstract for an article they have prepared in Finnish with the other members of their group as part of the ’Lääketieteellinen tieto ja tutkimus’ study block - write a summary of medical research in accordance with the topics given in "Lääketieteellinen tieto ja tutkimus"

Pass/fail.
To achieve a pass the students should be able to analyze satisfactorily a medical article, give constructive feedback on another team’s writing, score 50% or above on all online exercises, write a grammatically correct and logically constructed review of a journal article, and write an article abstract, respecting the stylistic conventions and linguistic features of the genre.
