General description

The course gives an overview on non-mammalian model organisms in research, with main focus on BioMediTech research expertise areas, namely the two commonly used organisms Drosophila and zebrafish.

Learning outcomes

After the course, students will have gained understanding on the benefits and limitations of non-mammalian model organisms in research. Students will be familiar with the central methodology in the field and are able to apply their knowledge of the model organisms in the planning of their research.

Contents

The course will cover the main anatomical and physiological features of Drosophila and zebrafish, introduce the current toolboxes, and offer hands-on training for essential methods related to Drosophila and zebrafish work. It will also give an overview on the keeping and raising of flies and fish in laboratory settings.
