General description

During this course, the participants begin to explore and reflect on their work from the perspective of building competency and developing expertise. This viewpoint is used both for understanding the student’s activities and the teacher’s own professional development.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course participants are expected to
• understand key pedagogical concepts of learning and teaching and be able to apply them to their own practice
• understand academic learning, teaching and supervisory processes
• know and be able to apply a variety of teaching methods for learning
• recognize both personal and collective developmental challenges in pedagogical expertise and practice

The course is personnel training for the teaching staff, but may include other staff representatives as well as post-graduate students.

Teaching methods

The course is based on working in multidisciplinary groups, thereby creating a peer network across units. The course consists of lectures, readings, study circles, and writing assignments. A virtual learning environment is used.

The course is based on group process and therefore it is necessary that the participants commit to active participation.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
Assessment of learning and competency is carried out via various tasks during the course, as well as a teaching portfolio, to be completed by the end of the course. The assessment is focused on how the participant recognizes and explicates his or her learning and teaching approach or philosophy and identifies points for development.
