Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will understand how economics, as a ‘science’ of choices, can be applied to the field of health care and look at some of the ways in which different societies solve the complex problems involved in organising health care for their citizens. The student will be able to evaluate the use of health-economic approaches to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of some of the different health systems around the world.

Contents

The course connects health and the discipline of economics and the content is divided into three main areas. 1) an introduction to/review of the discipline of economics, 2) explanation of the special features of health care sector and 3) understanding the organisation and comparison of different health care systems.
