Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course the students will be able to

• use sources to research debate topics and prepare speeches
• construct arguments and use appropriate language in argumentative speech
• recognize and use rhetorical devices
• use language typical of debates
• give informative and persuasive speeches in a well-structured manner
• evaluate, analyze and react to arguments critically
• function in groups according to the roles prescribed by the debating rules
• control timing when giving speeches

Contents

The course will go through

• analyzing, evaluating and constructing arguments
• analyzing and evaluating speeches
• practicing the structure and language of debate speeches
• debates according to rules agreed to in class (the British Parliamentary or the Australs format)

Teaching methods

The average student workload for a 2 credit course is 54 hours (2 x 27). This is a contact course with 26 h of classwork and 28 h of independent guided preparation.
