General description

In working life, university graduates are often expected to function in intercultural environments with diverse groups of people, in multi-professional teams, and in a wide range of professional roles. Mainly, this work will be done using English as a lingua franca. This course enables you to develop and practise some of the key skills needed to communicate and learn across diverse social, academic and cultural settings in English. The assignments and activities provide concrete intercultural learning and interaction as degree students and exchange students are given the opportunity to collaborate in and outside of class. The participants can better understand the relationship between language, communication and culture.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to
- use strategies to communicate and collaborate in diverse group settings in English
- apply different theories of intercultural communication to analyse and reflect on their own communication and the communication of others.
- reflect on and assess their ability to collaborate in different roles within a multicultural/multidisciplinary/multiprofessional group

Contents

To achieve the learning outcomes, students will
- participate in interactive workshops
- collaborate with a diverse student population (including both degree and exchange students)
- familiarize themselves with readings, talks, and podcasts from the field of intercultural communication.
- engage in reflective writing/discussion, giving and receiving feedback.
- complete independent field/project work.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Continuous/peer/self assessment, active participation in classroom work and successful completion of assignments.
