Learning outcomes

The objective is that the students acquire a deeper understanding of teaching textual skills, and the capacity to apply the central pedagogic methods of teaching pupils to read and write. The students expand their expertise in teaching pupils to read and write their native language, and understand the role of the native language as a tool for linguistic development and learning. In addition, the students become familiar with the basics of learning to read and write the Finnish language.

Contents

The course deals with learning how to read and write, and how to teach - from initial teaching to the subsequent phases of teaching and education. The teaching of textual skills, for example, is approached from the viewpoint of reading strategies and genre pedagogy. The key issue is to strengthen the skills relating to learning and understanding. The significance of reading is analysed from the viewpoint of linguistic awareness and in supporting the growth of the individuals' multicultural identity.
