General description
The course unit consists of two subunits: Introduction to Phonetics and General Linguistics.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of Introduction to Phonetics, the student will have a thorough understanding of the basic concepts of articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics.
Upon successful completion of General Linguistics, the student will be able to see language as an essential part of culture and human activity. In addition, the student will be able to explore the structure and meaning of language analytically. They will master the basic concepts of structural analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics) and will be able to identify the different functions and contexts of language usage.
Contents
Introduction to Phonetics explores speech in verbal communication mainly from the point of view of articulatory phonetics, but also to some extent from the perspective of acoustic and auditory phonetics.
General Linguistics introduces human language in research, the general and common features between languages, and the basic concepts of structural description. In addition, analysis exercises will reinforce the information given during lectures.

The lectures also include a revision test.
The student can alternatively complete the subunit General Linguistics (3 ECTS) by taking a book exam.
