Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to analyse different internal structures of sentences using appropriate terminology. The student will be able to describe and utilise a wide range of different structures of the English language. In addition, the student will be able to explain the differences between various structures and describe their usual contexts.
The student will have a good command of the speech sounds in English and will be able to employ them in various phonetic environments. They will be able to write down spoken English using the phonetic alphabet. The student will be familiar with intonation patterns and will be able to analyse the emphasis and intonation patterns of spoken English. The student will be able to read fluently using natural intonation with different texts, and will be able to identify the various features of different regional language variants.

The Grammar II subunit will familiarise the student with analysing sentence structures, in particularly verb phrases and noun phrases. The range of grammatical structures covered includes, for example, the following: modal verbs, verb complementation, particle verbs, prepositions, inversions, adjectives and adverbs, and the use of articles with proper nouns. The course unit will also familiarise the student with analysing language structures using authentic texts from corpus data. Tutorials will focus on assigned tasks and exercises, which are based on the provided theory.
The Phonology and Pronunciation II subunit will familiarise the student with intonation patterns and the prosodic features of English. The course exercises aim for the student to identify and adopt central intonation patterns. The student will also practice their speaking skills in front of an audience. Additionally, the course includes examining the segmental and prosodic features of different types of regional variations of the English language.
