Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have a thorough understanding of the characteristics of 20th century literature in Britain or the United States. The student will also be able to analyse the texts they read from different perspectives. The student will be able to identify forms of literary modernism and postmodernism and to interpret them in relation to specific cultural contexts. The student will be able to present observations and discuss the development of British or American literature since the year 1900.

Contents

Student chooses EITHER a) a course unit that covers British literature OR b) a course unit that covers American literature. These two options further explore themes that have been covered in the previous course units in basic and advanced studies. The two options provide different historical, thematic, aesthetic, and theoretical perspectives to literary analysis. The course will explore ways in which literature has reacted to societal changes from the era of modernism to the era of different types of postmodernism.
