General description

The course deals with questions regarding values that are important for all research. Studies on health and disease involve several specific ethical issues. Performing research and communicating the findings also has a codex called good research practice.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will
- be familiar with key concepts and theories of ethical questions
- know the principles of good research practice and recognize types of its violations
- be cognizant of ethical committee procedures and requirements
- know the virtues and responsibilities of a researcher
- be equipped to think about and deal with ethical issues at different phases of their studies
- have skills to identify and deal with ethical issues concerning research, e.g. treatment of participants, informed consent, data lifespan, publication and ethical reporting etc.
- know the key regulations and guidelines concerning permissions for obtaining data
- be familiar with the guidelines for ethical scientific practice for research professionals and know where to obtain more information on them
- know how to conduct research according to good scientific practice

Contents

The course unit on research ethics provides students with a general introduction of ethics including concepts and theories, as well as ethical questions encountered in different phases of research, and guidelines concerning ethically sustainable practice. Special focus is on good research practice and its violations. The new Turnitin text-checking system for identifying plagiarism at UTA will be introduced.
