Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have a thorough understanding of the Finnish legal system, its administration and courts of law, as well as of the legislation processes in Finland. The student will be able to compare the Finnish system with the respective systems in the areas where the student's own B working language is spoken and in the European Union. The student will be familiar with texts in law and administration, and will understand how they are written and translated. The student will also recognise the specific features and uses of such texts and will be able to analyse the requirements and cultural problems that translating these texts might include.

Contents

The course unit explores the similarities and differences between the legal systems in Finland and the student’s B working language countries, as well as the origins of the Finnish legal language, its development, and its specific features. The course unit also introduces translating in the European Union. In addition, the course unit covers legislative texts and their specific features; these texts include statutes, conventions, international treaties, legal documents, official solutions, and private documents.
