Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to produce an independent scientific study on a subject of their choosing in accordance with the ethical principles of scientific research. The student will be able to demonstrate a critical research perspective. In addition, the student masters the method chosen for their study and the central concepts of their subject, and is familiar with the fundamental research literature. The student will be able to analyse research data using a theoretical framework, as well as interpret the results and draw conclusions based on their material. The student will master the principles of scientific writing (logic, explicitness, analytical thinking, precision), and be able to write their thesis in faultless English.

Contents

The student will produce an independently written Master's thesis comprising of at least 20,000 words.

The master’s thesis is an academic study attainment. When students write their master’s theses they should observe sound scientific practice and ethical principles of studying and conducting research as befits the learning outcomes described in the curriculum.

When a student submits a master’s thesis for examination, s/he is expected to know and observe the sound scientific practice appropriate to the level of the degree s/he is completing. From 1 August 2015 and in order to ensure sound scientific practice, the text of all master’s theses will be checked by the supervisor in the Turnitin plagiarism detection software before grading.
