Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will understand how English has developed into a global language. The student will also understand how the varieties of English spoken in different parts of the world vary between different regions, societies, and communities, with a special focus on the language use of non-native speakers. In addition, the student will have a thorough understanding of the impact the globalisation of English has, the debates concerning the globalisation, as well as of the various research methods used to study this phenomenon.

Contents

The course unit explores English as a global language from a linguistic and socio-cultural perspective.
