General description

The course unit includes the following subunits:
- initial orientation (lectures arranged for new students by the school)
- basics of scientific information retrieval (5 hours)
- orientation in the student's field of study (lectures specific to degree programmes)
- personal study plan (HOPS).

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the principles of university studies and the study environment at the University of Tampere. The student will be familiar with the structure and learning outcomes of their degree programme as well as with the objectives and possibilities of their education.
The student will be able to carry out their study plan in appropriate ways, assess the advancement of their studies, and alter their plans if needed.
Furthermore, the student will possess the basic skills of scientific information retrieval needed within their field and will be able to utilise these skills in their studies.

Contents

During the Orientation Courses, the student will become familiar with the University of Tampere as a learning environment; with the degree programmes and studies in the School of Language, Translation, and Literary Studies; with study planning and study guidance services; and with the electronic and print materials and the services available at the university library.
The student will draw up a personal study plan (HOPS) in accordance with the guidelines of their degree programme.
The course unit explores topics such as study environment, degree programmes, study planning, guidance and counselling services, study technique, the legal protection of students, decision making, social services for students, university information services, information retrieval, and library services.

The course unit consists of four parts:
1. Orientation course
2. Introduction to the Degree Programme
3. Basics of Information Literacy
4. Personal study plan
