After completing the course, the doctoral student understands the basics of scientific argumentation and is able to identify and analyse the structure of arguments in scientific texts. S/he recognises the central types of arguments and knows how to evaluate their validity. S/he also understands the role of critical argumentation in scientific research and knows how to apply these skills in her/his own research.
Contents
The course concentrates on the role of argumentation in science and research. The doctoral students examine the structure and language of arguments and learn to identify them in texts. Different types of argumentation will be analysed and the most common ways of using argumentation erroneously are discussed. The students also learn to apply scientific argumentation to their own research.
