Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to identify the characteristics of linguistic variation and recognise the underlying factors that contribute to this variation. The student will be able to identify elements of dialects and contemporary spoken language, as well as describe how the coexistence of Finnish and other languages is reflected in written language. The student will be familiar with the characteristics of translated language and will be able to analyse the differences between original and translated Finnish.

Contents

The course unit explores the connections between translations and changes in language and society. The course unit examines the special features of translated Finnish as well as the historical, regional, and situational fluctuations of language. Additionally, the course unit investigates the effect of spoken Finnish on written Finnish and explores ways to create the illusion of spoken language in translations.
