General description

An introductory course in project planning and management.

Learning outcomes

After the course a student is able to:
-identify public health issues which are suitable for project work
-evaluate the need for a project in its operational environment
-plan the aims, the phases and implementation of a project
-plan a rough budget for a project
-map out a communication plan for a project
-plan how to evaluate the impact of a project
-identify possible risks before implementing a project
-produce a written project plan
-manage a small scale project
-evaluate public health projects

Contents

-planning a project and writing a project plan
-phases, implementation (action plan), budget and risk analysis of a project
-managing a project
-project communication and reporting
-project evaluation

Lectures, problem-based tasks in the Moodle, individual learning, writing the project plans in pairs, evaluation of other students’ project plans by means of guided discussions in the Moodle

Each task has to be completed and students are expected to take part in discussions in the discussion area. The project plan has to fulfill the criteria of a proper project plan.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
The project plan will be evaluated pass/fail; the Moodle discussions will be evaluated: has taken part / has not taken part in the discussions.
