Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the most commonly used terminology of English grammar. The student will be able to analyse written English sentences and phrases and identify key sentence and phrase types. The student will be able to describe and use the basic structures of the English language.
The student will be familiar with English language phonetics and the associated basic terminology. The student will be able to identify and produce the phonemes of English in both individual words and continuous speech. The student will be able to identify intonation and stress patterns in words, as well as appropriately use unstressed vowels and syllables. The student will be able to write words and short sentences using the phonetic alphabet. The student will be able to both speak English and read English texts out loud fluently.

Contents

The Grammar I subunit will explore the basic terminology of English grammar, as well as focus on defining and analysing sentence structure. The course will examine features of English grammar that are often problematic for learners, such as tense, conditionals, the passive, as well as word order and use of articles. Tutorials will focus on assigned tasks and exercises, which are based on provided theory.
The Phonology and Pronunciation I subunit explores the main features of the speech organs and the basic concepts of phonetics as well as the phonetics of the English language on the phonological level. The course unit also examines the use of phonemes in different phonetic environments.
