General description

The purpose of the Master's thesis (i.e. pro gradu) seminar is to support the student's progress in the thesis work. During the seminar the progress of each thesis is supported from the definition of the research problem through to completion of the thesis.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student:
- can formulate and define a clear research question and relate it to earlier research,
- can implement a methodologically sound research setup that answers the research question posed in the definition phase,
- can analyze the research results appropriately in relation to the research question,
- understands the importance of analyzing the backrground literature,
- understands the importance of focus and time management in research projects,
- can give constructive criticism and utilize criticism to improve scientific writing,
- understands the importance of the quality of written presentation in scientific work and that each individual needs to take the personal responsibility of the quality of writing and continuous development of his or her writing skills.

Contents

Seminar meetings. The seminar includes a 2-hour teaching in information acquisition skills organized by the library.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminar meetings, homework exercises.
The seminar can be taken on 4th year or later (second year of Master's degree studies), concurrently with the M.Sc. thesis.
