Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have a thorough understanding of the law and administration translation field and its characteristics and methods. The student will be able to translate texts in the field of law and administration from Finnish into German and justify their translation solutions. The student will also have an understanding of the role that juridical terms, the rigid form of juridical texts and set phrases have in the field of law and administration translation. The student will be able find equivalents for terms and typical expressions in the field of law and administration and to assess their suitability for use in a specific context.

Contents

The course unit explores the central text genres of law and administration translation, communicative situations, operators and sources of information, the legal systems of Finland and German-speaking countries, and the distinguishing features of legal language. In addition, the course unit includes analysing texts in the field of law and administration, using parallel texts, and translating and justifying translation solutions.
