This class focuses on the causes and consequences of party systems in advanced industrialized democracies.We will focus on how the political-institutional context? e.g., constitutional system and electoral rules ? affects how political activists organize both to influence policy outcomes and to attract voters, and how the results and relative success of their efforts affects legislative bargaining.

The course will begin with a survey political-science and sociological perspectives on the foundatoins of political parties and their policy influence. It then will focus on electoral rules and other details of political systems, such as executive-legislative relations and territorial organization of the state. Throughout, we will concentrate our attention on the incentives facing individual actors as they engage in the collective action demanded by the rules of democratic politics.
