Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student understands and observes the general principles of scientific writing and peer reviewing as well as the key publishing conventions in her/his own field of science. S/he is able to produce scientific text that is of high quality for her/his thesis and for other audiences. The doctoral student is able to read and assess scientific articles and monographs efficiently. S/he is able to interpret the nuances, registers and the author’s viewpoints in the text. The doctoral student also understands the roles and responsibilities involved in peer-reviewing.

Contents

In the courses organised under this heading, the doctoral student studies and analyses scientific texts published in different fields especially on the doctoral dissertation level. Producing scientific text and acting as a peer-reviewer are practiced in the courses. The doctoral student receives practical instruction and tips on how to write her/his own text. The courses often include lectures and exercises, and the doctoral students are able to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the courses to the writing process of their own dissertations.
