MVKS63 Law for Interpreters I 5 ECTS

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the basic principles of the Finnish society and legal system, will be able to take them into account, and will recognise their effect on the interpreter's working environment. The student will know the processes, actors, and basic principles of criminal and civil cases, as well as the administrative structures and operational principles of the police force. The student will be able to describe the phases, actors, and contents of the preliminary investigation of a criminal case, police investigation, and foreign affairs.

Contents

The course unit explores the principles of Finnish society and legal system that are important to the work of an interpreter. These principles include the following: the main principles of how authorities operate; the basic principles, phases, actors, and concepts of both criminal and civil proceedings; the administrative structure and principles of the police force; the phases, actors, and contents of preliminary investigation; the central principles of the Finnish immigration policy; the structures of the administration of immigration services and the reception of refugees and asylum seekers; the phases, actors, and contents of foreign affairs' proceedings.
