Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to produce an independent scientific study in a subject of their choice in accordance with the principles of research ethics, and to report the results in accordance with scientific conventions. The student will be familiar with relevant research literature and able to apply their chosen methodology in completing their study. The student will be able to analyse their data, organise background information, draw conclusions, justify their solutions, interpret the results, and reflect on their study as whole. Additionally, the student will be able to view their study and its results in regard to their field of study as a whole and to be aware of potential topics for further research.

Contents

The student will independently produce a 60–80 page thesis under the guidance of a supervisor, using either their A or B working language. A Master's thesis must include a one-page abstract in Finnish attached at the beginning. Additionally, there must be a 10–15 page summary attached at the end of the thesis, written in either the student’s A or B language. If the thesis is written in Finnish, the summary will be produced in the student’s B language; if the thesis is written in the B language, the summary will be written in Finnish.

The master’s thesis is an academic study attainment. When students write their master’s theses they should observe sound scientific practice and ethical principles of studying and conducting research as befits the learning outcomes described in the curriculum.

When a student submits a master’s thesis for examination, s/he is expected to know and observe the sound scientific practice appropriate to the level of the degree s/he is completing. From 1 August 2015 and in order to ensure sound scientific practice, the text of all master’s theses will be checked by the supervisor in the Turnitin plagiarism detection software before grading.
