Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will have an understanding of the principles and practices of consecutive interpreting. They will be able to consecutively interpret speeches and presentations on general topics, according to the requirements of the communication situation. The student will know how to interpret accurately without unnecessary omissions or additions. They will have a thorough understanding of the principles of the interpreter's note-taking technique and will be able to efficiently use and develop their own technique of note-taking. The student will be able to analyse source language speech, make strategic interpreting decisions, and analyse and justify their choices. In addition, they will be able to advise and guide the client in meeting the requirements for successful consecutive interpreting and in matters relating to the tasks of the consecutive interpreter.
Contents
The purpose of the course unit is to introduce the student to consecutive interpreting in negotiation, conference, and court situations. The course unit also covers interpreter's note-taking technique. In addition, the course unit explores the accuracy of interpretation, message segmentation, and the informative content of a message. The course unit includes language-specific interpreting exercises.
