General description

The course unit is intended for students at the University of Tampere who act as tutors to international students in their student organisations.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course unit, the student
• will understand the importance of peer support in introduction to a new culture and society
• will know how to describe the central features of Finnish university studies to a student familiar with a different learning culture and help them find their place within the university community
• will know which courses their own school offers and will be able to describe them to international students
• will be able to assess and consider intercultural differences in interaction, and will appreciate cultural diversity.

Contents

International tutors help international students integrate into the University of Tampere and the student community and introduce them to Finnish culture.

Tutors participate in training for international tutors, where they learn about the role of a tutor and the guidance provided for students. In addition to this, tutors will familiarise themselves with
• the curriculum and teaching schedule of their own degree programme
• other teaching offered by the university (including language studies)
• English material written for international students.
Tutors take an active role in the systematic tutoring of students for the duration of at least one semester.

Teaching methods

•Participation in training for international tutors, completing the feedback survey (in English).
• Self-reflection (an essay and/or learning diary of about two pages) (in Finnish or in English). The recommended length of the self-reflection is two pages.

Further information

The course unit can only be completed once. The course can be included in either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. International tutoring can be included in the internationalisation module.

An approved completion of the course unit entitles the student to a certificate of international tutoring, issued by the university.
