General description

The course unit is intended for students at the University of Tampere who act as tutors in charge in their student organisations.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course unit, the student
• will understand the importance of peer support
• will know how to describe the central features of university studies
• will be familiar with the degree structure
• will know how to plan, steer and assess the activities of the peer group and their own performance as a provider of peer support
• will knows the person in charge of study guidance and other study guidance personnel for their own degree programme.

Contents

Student tutors act as peer supervisors for new students, helping them find their place as students and members of the student community. The tutor in charge is the peer supervisor of student tutors, planning and coordinating tutoring in cooperation with them. The tutor in charge plans the initial guidance for new students together with the person in charge of study guidance for the degree programme and the school’s Study Services (or participates in the planning of the initial guidance for new students together with the person in charge of study guidance for the degree programme and Study Services).

The tutor in charge participates in the training organised for tutors in charge and tutors. In the training, the students learn, among other things, about the role of tutors and tutors in charge and the guidance provided for students.

In addition to this, the tutors in charge will familiarise themselves with
• the curriculum and teaching schedule of the degree programme
• the study guidance plan of the degree programme
• other teaching offered by the university (including language studies).
