The course provides elementary theoretical knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, tissue technology, and bioinformatics. Safety training for laboratory work. After the Kick-start studies, the student is familiar with the structure of most important biomolecules and knows the basic metabolic routes. She/he has elementary knowledge of molecular genetics and how the genetic information is utilized (transcription and translation). In addition, the student knows the basic molecular biology methods. In the area of cell biology and tissue technology, the student understands how cellular structures and cellular functions are interrelated with each other, and the student is familiar with the basic cell culture techniques. In the area of bioinformatics, the student knows how to search data from databases and analyze the high throughput sequencing data.

The kick-start module comprises of web-based assignments in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, tissue technology, and bioinformatics. These studies can be completed via internet and thus do not require physical attendance. The practical work in laboratory and first-aid skills are compulsory for all students coming outside outside previous BioMediTech. These will be offered at Kauppi-campus, and require physical attendance.
Based on the results of this course a personal study plan will be made for each student and, if needed, the university may require that the student conducts additional studies (max. 60 credits) in addition to the Master's degree studies.
