Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of Intermediate Studies in English Language, Literature, and Translation, the student will be able to critically read and assess various types of English-language texts, such as scientific writing, literature, and nonfictional prose. The student will be able to actively and independently apply their knowledge in writing academic and professional texts. The student will be familiar with the basic concepts of their discipline. They will be able to employ these concepts to analyse spoken and written language and other fundamental questions within their discipline. The student will be able to design and conduct an independent scientific study within their discipline. In addition, the student will be able to discuss topics related to their discipline and to present well-grounded arguments.
A student who has completed the English Language and Literature study path will be able to analyse English-language materials using the central methods and terminology of grammar, linguistics, and literary studies. The student will be able to identify the impact of the communication situation and literary trends on the material under study. In addition, the student will be able to compare the structural and stylistic features of different types of texts and to explain them to a wider audience.
A student who has completed the English Translation and Interpreting study path will be familiar with the fundamental principles of professional multilingual communication, translation, and interpreting. The student will be able to translate general texts from English into Finnish and simple general texts from Finnish into English. In addition, the student will be able to interpret short speech turns from English into Finnish and from Finnish into English in everyday situations.
