Learning outcomes

After completing the module on political participation the student is able to understand different forms of political participation. They have a knowledge of theoretical frameworks through which elections, parties and social movements are analysed. The student is able to analyse theoretically also new forms of political participation, like political consumerism and internet as a means of political participation. They know the societal impact of different forms of political participation in Finland and other democracies, and are able to discuss the current challenges facing political participation.

Content

The module consists of two course units. Parties, Elections and Political Participation (5 ECTS) concentrates on conventional and new forms of political participation. Political Communication and Rhetoric (5 ECTS) analyses the significance of media and language in politics.
