General Interpreting, 35– ECTS

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the General Interpreting study module, the student will be able to perform as an intermediary in cross-cultural communication situations. The student will have a good command of notation techniques, preparation techniques, as well as of simultaneous, consecutive, and prima vista interpreting. The student will also have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of different forms of interpreting, such as court and community interpreting, and the situations that involve them. The student will be able to guide and advise the client in interpreting arrangements, the conditions for successful interpreting, and with interpreter-related information in general, as well as operate in a professional and collegial manner as part of an interpreting team. The student will be aware of the role of an interpreter and the importance of ethics, and will be able to choose suitable interpreting strategies as well as analyse and justify their choices. Additionally, the student will be familiar with interpreting research and be able to acquire information on interpreting theory, including on their own research subject.

Further information

For students that have chosen General Interpreting as their field of specialisation, it is recommended to take the Spoken Finnish and Public Speaking alternative studies course unit from the Finnish for Translators II study module. Additionally, in accordance with what the student is specialising in, optional studies in some of the following course units are recommended:
• Law and Administration Translation Seminar (Finnish – B working language, or B working language – Finnish) 5 ECTS
• Technical Translation Seminar (Finnish – B working language, or B working language – Finnish) 5 ECTS
• Business Translation Seminar (Finnish – B working language, or B working language – Finnish) 5 ECTS
• Introduction to Translation in Specialised Subjects 5 ECTS
