Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of their studies in Literary and Audiovisual Translation, the student will have a thorough understanding of the field of multilingual and multimodal communication. The student will have a thorough understanding of the specific challenges of literary and audiovisual translation and will be able to work as a professional translator in the specialised area of literary and audiovisual translation. During Master's studies, the student will focus either on audiovisual or literary translation. Upon successful completion of their Master's studies, the student will have a thorough understanding of the specialised subject they focused on during their Master's studies and will be able to work as a specialist in their chosen field of specialisation. The student will also have a good knowledge of the research done in the field of literary and audiovisual translation.
Content
The order of studies
The student that specialises in Literary and Audiovisual Translation will complete compulsory course units for a total of 20 ECTS and a minimum of 15 ECTS of alternative studies. The compulsory course units are the following:
• MVKS28 Image, Word, and Sound: Introduction to Multimodality (5 ECTS)
• MVKS60 Introduction to Literary Translation (5 ECTS)
• MVKS61 Introduction to Audiovisual Translation (5 ECTS)
• MVKS29 Literary Translation (5 ECTS)
• MVKS30 Subtitling (5 ECTS)
In their Master's studies, the student will complete only one of the introductory courses (MVKS60 Introduction to Literary Translation or MVKS61 Introduction to Audiovisual Translation), as the student will have already completed one of these during their intermediate studies. This way, the compulsory study units will amount to a total of 20 ECTS. If the student has not completed one of the introductory courses during their intermediate studies, then the student must complete both of the introductory courses in their Master's studies. The student must complete the introductory courses before attending the course units of Literary Translation and Subtitling.
From the alternative studies, the student will complete one of the two seminars (Literary Translation Seminar or Audiovisual Translation Seminar). In addition, the student must complete one course unit (5 ECTS) of translation into their B working language, that is, one of the following course units:
• MVKS33 Literary Translation from Finnish (5 ECTS)
• MVKS24E Translating and Editing for Publication (5 ECTS)
• MVKS34 Radio Translation (5 ECTS)
There is slight variation in the selection of course units that explore translating into the student's B working language depending on the B language; thus, not all course units mentioned above are offered in all languages.
The student may complete the remaining 5 ECTS either by attending an alternative course unit in the subject of Literary and Audiovisual Translation or by attending a free choice course unit that is available for all students in the Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies.
It is recommended that students specialising in Literary and Audiovisual Translation choose either the course unit TRSU07 Translated Finnish or TRSU08 Creative Writing from the alternative studies in the Finnish for Translators II study module.
