Under the Act on authorised translators, in accordance with the government decree and the policies defined by the Examination Board of Authorised Translators, a person who has completed a Master's degree can apply for the rights of an authorised translator from their B working language into their A working language in the following cases:
1. The applicant has completed Master's studies in translation or in translation studies, or has completed a Master's degree that includes or has been complemented with studies of authorised translation worth at least 6 ECTS.
2. The Master's degree completed by the applicant includes at least 60 ECTS of optional studies on translation, including or complemented with studies of authorised translation worth at least 6 ECTS.
In accordance with the government decree (2007/1232), translation studies are "theoretical and practical university-level studies on translation".
The 60 ECTS worth of translation studies and the included 6 ECTS of authorised translation studies mentioned in the Act must all be completed as part of the 120 ECTS Master's degree. The coursework completed as part of Bachelor's degree is not taken into account.
Although the studies allow a person to apply for the rights of an authorised translator into only one language, it is recommended for the students of authorised translation to also complete an exercise course from A into B working language. The reason for this recommendation is that translating into a B working language develops and broadens the authorised translation student's skills. In addition, the course prepares the student to complete the optional examination of an authorised translator into the B working language. The authorisation to translate official documents in both directions in the student's working language pair can be a valuable asset in the labour market. Consisting of three course units, the authorised translation studies form a coherent whole worth 10 ECTS.
